Memo: KANSAS IN BRIEF MALPRACTICE AWARD SETS RECORD FOR STATE
Compiled from Eagle news services and staff reports
A Sedgwick County District judge has formally approved the largest medical malpractice verdict in state history.
The $6 million award formalized Monday was won by the parents of a 10- year-old girl who suffered brain damage just before her birth.
During a six-week trial before Judge Karl Friedel, witnesses testified that Carl Christman, a Wichita obstetrician, was negligent. They said he ignored the warning signs on a fetal heart monitor that showed the baby being carried by Angela Hoyt was in distress.
Christman didn't appeal the jury verdict. With interest accumulated during its 10-year payout period, the award is expected to amount to more than $8 million.
